The Latin word "ex(s)equi" means "to accompany [a dead person] to the grave," and Heinrich Schütz composed his Musikalische Exequien expressly to be sung at the funeral of his patron, Prince Heinrich von Reuss, at the Prince's request. However, once Reuss heard the piece, he so loved it that he frequently had it performed for him while he was still alive. This music expresses a deep faith; it sings of the joy and consolation of a Christian dying in Christ.

The renowned Musikalische Exequien is the first requiem composed in the German language. At these concerts it will resonate in the sanctuary of Holy Cross Church in Santa Cruz.
